AMISH WOOD MILK, ANYONE?
Got a hodge-podge of newsy items related to the Amish that I'd like to share today. Here's a menu and you can pick and choose what interests you:
THE ATLANTIC: The Atlantic Monthly used to be a prestigious journal that showcased the best of the best when it came to literary writing and news. I actually used to read the Atlantic Monthly when I was a teenager, but it's probably been 25 years since I have bought a copy, but the name still is prestigious. So I paid attention when an article showed up about the Amish "bearding cuttings" the other day, but, really, the article doesn't break much new ground. It's an okay article and I am sharing it simply because its the esteemed Atlantic, but I think most of the points in the article are ones we've discussed here a lot already. But click here to read.
DUTCH GLOW AMISH WOOD MILK: Okay, my opinion, but I'm dubious that this polish has any connection to the Amish at all. I maybe wrong, but it just seems like another company parachuting in and trading off the Amish name. Again, as I wrote the other day, I have no problem with commerce involving the Amish. Everyone - including the Amish - does it, but this one is dubious. Maybe it's great polish, KOMO TV seems to think so, but Amish? I have my doubts. Click here to read more. ABDUCTION AFTER-MATH UPDATE:
Two Amish girls who were abducted from their family's farm-stand, abused, and then released have been offered counseling, but their father says they seem to be faring well at the moment. Click here to read more.
And the Amish community came together over the weekend to build a new garage for the couple who played a pivotal role in reuniting the girls with their family. While Amish culture is imperfect and complicated, this type of "pay-it-forward" event is what makes the Amish a special culture.
Unless there is anything major in this case, we'll wrap up the coverage just so those girls can get back to their privacy. But I am glad it has had a seemingly happy ending.
