With this being the tail end of “apple season”, many Amish cooks are making their own batches of applesauce, homemade cider, and cider doughnuts.  The applesauce can be canned for enjoyment year round.  Another way many Amish cooks choose to use their applesauce is in cakes.  Makes a great, moist cake. You can frost the cake (yum, I vote for that:),dust it with powdered sugar, or just enjoy by itself for a not-too-sweet treat. Doesn’t this look delicious? HOMEMADE APPLESAUCE CAKE

1 cup sugar

1 cup salad dressing (Miracle Whip or similar)

1/2 milk

2 cups applesauce

1 tsp. vanilla

3 cups flour

2 tsp. baking soda

2 tsp. cinnamon

1/2 tsp. nutmeg

1/2 tsp. allspice

1/2 tsp. salt

      In a medium bowl, combine the dry ingredients and set aside.  Cream the sugar, salad dressing and milk together.  Beat in the applesauce and vanilla.  Gradually add the dry ingredients.

     Pour into a greased and floured 13X9 inch pan.  Bake at 350 degrees F for 35 minutes.  Cake will be golden brown and pull away from sides of pan.

    • Use a Miracle Whip type salad dressing, I’ll change that in the ingredients to make it a bit more clear…

    Now that we have our new oven installed I can start baking again and what a great way to start with this wonderful looking cake. We have lots of apple sauce as our apple trees fruit in abundance and so we have fresh apple sauce every season. I will imagine it will be a very moist cake due to the amount of apple sauce in it. Thank you for a great recipe to try.
