As we approach the Memorial Day weekend I thought I would re-post a recipe for “barbecued burgers” which first ran in the Amish Cook column back in 2002.  Also re-posted here is a recipe for homemade barbecue sauce which comes from the Amish settlement in Choteau, Oklahoma.  Combine these two great recipes and you’ll have a sure winner for your cookout this weekend!

  • 2 slightly beaten eggs
  • 2 cups soft bread crumbs
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 pounds hamburger
  • ¼ cup minced onion
  • ¼ cup milk
  • 4 cups catsup
  • dash Worchestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 2 teaspoons dry mustard
  • 2 cups brown sugar
  • 2 cups vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons ginger
  • 2 teaspoons chili powder
  • 1 /2 cup chopped onion
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 can tomato sauce
  • Mix all together.
  1. For the burgers, mix the ingredients listed above under the burger heading. Mix well.
  2. Shape into thin patties.
  3. Broil over hot coals, brushing both sides with barbecue sauce.
  4. You can use the sauce of your choice, or be bold and use this recipe that comes from Choteau, Oklahoma’s Amish settlement. Simply mix the above ingredients until well blended and baste over burgers.
