Here in southwest Ohio is the historically preserved grounds of an old Amish estate. The Amish settlement was active in the mid-1800s and one of the homesteads has been lovingly restored and preserved and been turned over to the local park service. I often take my kids to the Chrisholm old Amish farmstead in southwest Ohio.

The original Amish settlers had the surname Augspurger, there were also some Kinsingers, Kennels, and Schrocks to be found. I've not heard of any Yoders, which is one of the most common Amish last names, along with Miller.
The Augspurgers have not been in the Amish faith for quite a while, but their roots remain and, in fact, they have held an annual family reunion for, well, unless the pandemic interrupted it, the last 104 years.
So in celebration of that reunion, Friends of Chrisholm board member Anne Jantzen gave me this recipe which she uses frequently and has rich Mennonite roots either from the Augspurger, Schrock, or Kennel families. Enjoy
When sugar isn't available, most Amish homemakers readily turn to honey or maple syrup or in their baking and cooking. Honey is a wonderful way to add flavoring to a meat meal, especially chicken. My parents loved this Chrisholm classic which uses nice, fresh chicken breasts. It is full of delicious flavors.
Basted the chicken with the honey-mustard mixture every 15 minutes. You can season here with pepper and just let it soak in the juices. Add some garlic cloves here and make it honey garlic chicken. The honey adds just the right amount of sweetness without being overpowering. A delicious chicken dinner! This is an easy recipe, just let it simmer in the oven and enjoy. A hint of parsley is also a nice addition.
This Amish honey-baked chicken may be done after just an hour if using boneless chicken, so keep an eye on it and remove when golden brown. Serve with rice or a vegetable on the side. This is a nice protein-packed dish.
