Adams County: Keim Family Market

Keim Family Market is perched along State Route 32, the Appalachian Highway, as it meanders across southern Ohio’s hill country.  The four-lane highway starts out in Cincinnati as a typical four-lane artery hemmed in by fast-food restaurants and suburban shopping malls, but quickly emerges into the verdant countryside and smokey-colored hills of the area known as “Edge of Appalachia.”  Here the corn country of Ohio’s farm belt disappears and is replaced with rock-ribbed hills, deep valleys, and rushing creeks.

Keim Family Market Travel long enough east from Cincinnati and you’ll end up in Adams County, Ohio.  Long one of Ohio’s poorest counties, the Amish started moving to the area in the early 1970s, infusing the economically parched hills with needed commerce.  The tiny ribbons of road in Adams County are now home to dozens of Amish-owned businesses.  One of my favorites sits right on Route 32 and that is the Keim Family Market.  This bakery was started by Roy and Mattie Keim in the mid-80s as a roadside stand. It has since grown and grown even long after the Keims sold it to Daniel Miller, who runs it today.  Keim is known for their mouth-melting baked goods, like these homemade creme horns. WOW!  I’ve had these before and they taste as amazing as they look.  Rachel and I actually didn’t get these yesterday, electing for some peanut butter whoopie pies instead (gotta draw a line somewhere!)   If you haven’t seen my video tour of Keim Family Market, click here to watch.  If you do stop by be sure to say “hello” to Daniel and tell him The Amish Cook’s editor sent you:)  I’ll be posting more about Adams County in photos and words in the days ahead!

Well…there goes the diet. *L* Seeing these makes me want one. Too bad I can’t just reach into the screen and select one. Now…if we could only get the recipe. Uh. Hey Kevin? When’s your next visit to Adam’s County? A recipe would be great for those of us who can’t get there on our own. By the way. This website gets better and better every day! I’m still loving it!

Those look just like the creme horns my grandmother used to buy for me at her local bakery. It’s closed now. I’ve had others, but they haven’t come close. I might just have to drive up there and see how they compare. My mouth is watering at the very thought!

  4. You need to try their lemon turnovers. The best ever! I can’t get anything but those every time I go. Also, in the summer their homemade icecream is to die for. Last summer they had blackberry icecream. Yum. I’ll be back.
