Flat Rock, Illinois: During the course of working on Amish Cooks Across America, I had the pleasure to visit a myriad of Plain settlements across the USA. One of my favorite was the New Order Amish community of Flat Rock, Illinois. This is a small community about 15 minutes south of Robinson, Illinois, not far from Vincennes, Indiana. The community is quite welcoming and has a bit more of an evangelical bent than others. Watch this short video tour of Flat Rock.
These are some signs pointing the way to some of the Amish home-based businesses in the area, plus there is a neat little country grocery store called Villas. Definitely worth a stop if you are in the area. This is one of the Biblical verse signs that are seen at the end of the driveway at the homes of some of the Flat Rock Amish. Definitely a more evangelical tone than you see in most Amish communities. This is not a judgement on part, just an observation.

The "Truth will make you free" sign is similar to the signs Mennonites have in their front yards in my part of New York State. I have never been to a New Order settlement, but would like to some day.

Thank you mentioning Flat Rock. I live in the area and have shopped at Villas numerous times. There is also an Amish community near Oblong IL, which is about 20 minutes from Flat Rock. There is also a store there, but haven't had the chance to go there yet.

Had an interesting experience in Flat Rock. We decided to drive there to visit an old (Amish) friend. We went to the house indicated in our directory as his and knocked on the door. It was now his son's house but he hitched up the wagon and took us to see his dad. We had a nice visit with them and then returned to get our car. It wouldn't start. They tried everything and in the end we were invited to stay the night. In the morning during prayer, our friend prayed that the car would start. Later my husband made a comment about wanting to believe it would start, but not expecting it to. When we got back to the car, we put in the key, and .... it started right up! O ye of little faith. 🙂 A very eventful 24 hours.

Missy, isn't God great. Why are we always so surprised when he answers our prayers ?

We had quite a shock when the van started and had to admit we had little faith that it would. And then question ourselves as to why we couldn't believe it would happen. It was a good experience for us.
