I have visited many Amish homes over the years for many meals and there’s something I don’t think I’ve ever eaten for a meal while visiting: hamburgers. This lack of a burger encounter doesn’t in any way mean that hamburgers aren’t popular among the Amish. They are. But usually, when I have dropped in on a home for supper there is a stovetop meal being fixed, or something a little more “formal" since I’m usually considered company. But I wish had dropped in somewhere when they were serving Super Juicy Baked Burgers like these.
❓ FAQ
The Amish are not as insulated as they used to be, so buggies head into town and pass the Golden Arches or Burger King on a regular basis. Some even decide to stop in for a burger. Eating out is seen as a "treat" for most Amish people and fast-food is included in that. So while eating fast-food isn't a regular thing for most Amish, it is a treat. So, yes, you'll even see a buggy in the drive-thru lane sometimes!
Hamburgers on the grill are most common during the summer when you can cook outside. Burgers are very popular at picnics and outdoor gatherings, just like they are among the non-Amish. So while I have not tasted a burger at an Amish farm, at least I don’t think so, I’m not sure if I can remember every single food I’ve eaten in over two decades of visiting Amish homes. So maybe I have.
Anyway, Amish cookbooks are full of many variations on hamburgers. You don’t often just find a plain hamburger on the grill at an Amish cookout, they are usually dressed up and fancied up. There are just so many variations on the great American burger.
There’s a hamburger wagon in a small town near where I live that has a booming business, and their burgers, I understand, are very simple… Salt, pepper, pickle, onion and very thin. Other restaurants attain cult status with their burgers being big and thick.

Kevin,
I just read your last e-mail. I just want to say.... Keep on rambling! The personal stories as heartbreaking as some may have been about the Yoder family have touched my heart in ways you will never know. Your own personal stories have blessed me, have at times put a smile on my face when it was difficult to smile, and have sometimes made me cry. Knowing there are still people out there who truly care about others these days feels so rare but is so uplifting! Thank you for all you do and the stories and recipes you share.
