We have a super blogroll this week, with an interesting blend of topics, so let’s get right to it. Our first stop? Patricia’s Patchwork Quilt!
TACO TWIST: Take a look at this delicious Mennonite recipe that Patricia got out of an old family cookbook. I’ve written before about the strong Tex-Mex influence on Plain community cooking and this recipe is no different. Click here to get the recipe.
MENNONITES NEAR DAYTON,VIRGINIA – I’ve spent a lot of time in this settlement and love it. Former Amish church member Saloma Furlong spent a day in this wonderful community and posted a bunch of gorgeous photos that really gives you a feel for the settlement. So, click here to revisit one of my favorite Plain places! There’s a whole chapter in my someday to be published book devoted to my time in Dayton, Virginia.
NEW AMISH SETTLEMENT: WEST PLAINS, MISSOURI – Man, I read a post like this and I just ache to get out an explore new Amish settlements. I will soon…the weather is nice, my kids are a little older, hopefully this is my longest stretch without visiting an Amish community…I have some places I plan to visit and share with you all soon! Anyway, check out Don Burke’s visit to the relatively new community of West Plains. This type of post reminds me of why I love visiting new Amish settlements: the new traditions, customs, recipes, and friends to discover. Just a very well done picture package of this community. I will add my two cents: not uncommon at all to see Amish people with phone lines, cable TV lines, electric, flush toilets…in my experience – and this, I am sure, differs from place to place – when Amish people move into a home once owned by a non-Amish person, they have a good year or so to gut the place of the modern amenities. That can be a time-consuming and expensive process. Click here to see these wonderful photos.
AMISH GIRL IN BUGGY PAINTING: I can’t wait to see this finished one by Cheryl McNulty, this might be my most favorite painting yet. I just think she captures the serenity of the subject well, yet perhaps some more nuanced undertones that can be picked up once it is done. Click here to see the work as it progresses.
ANGELICA, NEW YORK AMISH – Check out some wonderful photos from Tom from this bucolic Upstate New York Amish community. Click here.
SEA SALT AND VANILLA BEAN AMISH CARAMELS: Man, these look good. She even individually wrapped them. Wow. All I can say is wow. Click here for the recipe and amazing photos!
AMISH CHOCOLATE CHIP PUDDING COOKIES: And, really, how could you top these? Oh, yeah, make some caramels. But otherwise, these look amazing. Click here.
