Okay, some of these I've stayed at and can personally vouch for, while others are just on my "wish list." This doesn't necessarily mean these are the best of the best, I just haven't stay in all that many, this list is just MY list and you can use it as a guide or however you wish.
SUNFLOWER INN - YODER, KANSAS: 3307 Switzer Rd, Yoder, KS 67585. Phone:(620) 465-2200
I have been to Yoder and one of the best night’s sleep I’ve ever had was at the Sunflower Inn, a converted Amish carriage house and farmhouse. The inn is owned and operated by Kendra Horst, who herself is two generations removed from the Amish.
“We get customers from all over the United States, people who are just coming to Yoder to experience the Amish community,” said Kendra Horst, who manages in the inn and who is herself two generations removed from being Amish. The inn’s Amish ambiance goes right down to the morning wake-up call.
“The rooster wakes you up at six a.m. Some love it, some hate it. Either way, it is nostalgic.” Horst laughed.
Here is a recipe for Kendra Horst's yummy Yoder coffeecake.
- ½ cup sugar
- 1 large egg, beaten
- 4 tablespoons (½ stick) butter
- 1½ cups all-purpose flour
- 3 tablespoons baking powder
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ¾ cup whole milk
Topping 1 cup firmly packed brown sugar - 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
- 6 tablespoons melted butter
- ½ cup chopped walnut pieces
- Preheat the oven to 375°F. Grease a 9 by 13-inch baking dish and set it aside.
- Combine the sugar, egg, butter, flour, baking powder, salt, vanilla, and milk in a large mixing bowl. When the mixture has a creamy consistency, spread it into the prepared pan.
- To make the topping, mix all the topping ingredients in a small bowl.
- Sprinkle over the cake batter.
- Bake for 20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
This is a winter photo I look of the Murphin Ridge Inn, which consists of the original inn building and some new cottages. I've stayed in both and it's always been a wonderful experience!
MURPHIN RIDGE INN, 750 Murphin Ridge Rd, West Union, OH 45693 Phone:(877) 687-7446
I struggled with whether to call this a B&B or a "country inn"....I'll admit it's more of a country inn than a B&B, but this gem is tucked away in the middle of Ohio's Adams County's Wheat Ridge Amish settlement. While other Amish communities get more publicity, really, there are few Amish communities more beautiful than Adams County, Ohio in terms of its rugged beauty. The ridges and hills here are sometimes known as "The Little Smokies."

WHITE HOUSE FARM BED & BREAKFAST: I've wanted to stay here before, but I have not had a chance yet. This B&B is run by an Amish-Mennonite couple. Edna Yoder is known for her homemade stuffed French toast and this is tucked away in the bucolic Plain community of Montezuma, Georgia. Click here to read more.

FARMSTEAD LODGING:8457 County Road 77, Fredericksburg, Ohio 44627,Phone: 330-674-0603 Someday I'd love to check this place out. It apparently is one of the rare actual Old Order Amish-run bed & breakfasts. Guests get to help with chores. It's sort of below the radar, doesn't get a lot of publicity, but I've heard nothing but good things. If anyone has a chance to stay here before I do, let us know about your experience.
