Amish cake testing "broom"
By Kevin Williams
This our weekly whirl through Amazon to explore what "Amish items" you might find. It's always fun and interesting to see what is out there. Wow, I have to say I'm so intrigued by the "Amish Cake Tester." I've not seen that in many Amish kitchens but, honestly, when I am in an Amish kitchen I'm usually eating the cake, not testing it, so this may well be a tool many clever cooks use. I've seen plenty of cake testers, my parents have one that they've had for 30 years...but I just hadn't seen a "broom " one like this...So let's check these out!
AMISH MUSCADINE JELLY: This is interesting. Muscadines are a type of wild grape generally found in the southern United States. Amish cooks in the South have taken an interest in these flavorful fruits in making pies, jellies, or jams. So to be able to order and sample some would be intriguing for sure. SCHNITZ APPLES: Dried tart apples is how this from Kauffman's Fruit Farm (a well-known Amish business in Lancaster County, PA describes it). Probably does make for a healthful snack, although the site's claims that eating them help you lose weight? I doubt it. Sheesh, maybe I should order them just to be sure....Click here to see and read about the Snitz Apples.
AMISH BLOSSOM BUCKET FIGURINE: I'm not usually a big "figurine fan",but this is kind of neat. Click here to see.
AMISH WOODEN SPOON COOKBOOK: I mentioned this book yesterday, a superb cookbook by a young Amish woman who is a member of the Andy Weaver sect of conservative Amish in rural Ohio. She was only around 20-years-old when she wrote this book back in 2000 and it is a charming cookbook, very authentic. Click here.
AMISH PIE HOLDER: Gloria recently wrote about a hand-made, wooden pie holder that her grandfather made and it holds 7 pies. I'm still working on bringing a photo of that to all of you. But this is an absolutely stunning looking wooden, Amish hand-crafted double pie holder, which is more commonly used by Amish cooks. Click here to take a look.
AMISH CAKE TESTER "BROOM": Yea, I found this one very intriguing. I mean, I always hate having to pierce my cakes with butter knife...then you have these unsightly insert holes in the middle of them. With this cake tester, those aren't an issue any more. This seems like it'd be a great gift for someone who bakes a lot, very neat. Click here to take a look!

I have a cake tester that I have had for a long time. I don't remember where i got it. Before that I used toothpicks. That is very clever though.

Carolyn, yea, toothpicks work great, Ijust never seem to have them handy...
