AMISH BACON DRESSING: Lancaster County, Pennsylvania features many well-known Amish foods, from whoopie pies to shoofly pies.  But one of the less heralded, but no less loved, food concoctions is a hot bacon dressing that is a staple on family menus in the area.  I was pleasantly surprised to see that there is now a commercial brand of it available.  I mean, commercial brands never taste as good as homemade, but at least it is something comparable for people to taste if they don't feel like making their own.  Odd, on Amazon, the product has two reviews, one 5-star, the one 1-star. I tend to believe the 5-star more (although taste is definitely subjective).  Click here to buy this authentic dressing.

ELDERBERRY JAM:  Wow, was so happy to see this, and so are other people. Here is what one Amazon reviewer had to say:

My husband is from Oklahoma and his mother used to make Elderberry Jelly when he was a child. We live in the Texas Panhandle and there is not an elderberry bush within 500 miles of us. I was so happy to find this product. It's great Jelly.

Click here for this wonderful concoction.

AMISH FOUR BEAN SALAD:  I'm not a huge fan of these multi-bean salads, but that is just me.  Plenty of people really like them, click here to order.

Montezuma Amish Mennonite Church is one of three Plain churches in the area

    Monetzuma Georgia Amish-Mennonite cookbook

AMISH MENNONITE MONTEZUMA COOKBOOK: This is one of the first Amish cookbooks I owned....it gives a wonderful culinary and cultural insight into the southern influence on Amish culture. When this book was published in the early 90s, Monetzuma was one of the few Plain settlements in the South.  That's no longer the case today, but this cookbook remains a timeless classic. Here is a description of the book:

A collection of recipes, ideas and helpful hints to nourish you and yours -- including appetizers, beverages, candies, casseroles, canning and freezing, microwave, Oriental foods and pastries. From Hobo Supper to American lasagna, Velvet ice cream to refrigerator mashed potatoes, this is a famous and fabulous compendium of classics!

And, yeah, there are some offbeat recipes there some offbeat, non-southern recipes in there, but there are also some really good, authentic, wonderful Amish meets southern creations.

Click here to order, looks like there are plenty of used ones in stock and good prices.  My copy disappeared years ago during one of my moves, so it's tempting to order one myself!

WHOOPIE PIES:  Treat yourself for Valentine's Day.  Man, if you are never going to make it to Amish country, this is an amazing way to get an authentic taste...here is the description:

    • Children love them (and adults too); Wow your guests! These Amish-style snacks are each conveniently sized at about 3" diameter and pack a wonderful homemade flavor
