A new book about the Amish....
AMISH AND THE ENVIRONMENT: Man, this would be a fascinating read. Many outsiders erroneously paint the Amish as pastoral stewards of the land, but my experience has shown the reality to be much more complicated. I've seen plenty of Amish dumping vats of chemical-laden fertilizers on plants and there has been tension out west where Amish and Mennonites have been accused to making themselves too much at home on public lands.  The Amish relationship with the environment is very nuanced, very much dependent on which particular church also. So this book would be fascinating. I may have to get it. MILLIE'S TRIPLE TREAT COOKIES: Let's check in this week with Illinois Amish author, Millie Otto, who writes a column for a couple of newspapers out there. This week her recipe is for an Amish classic cookie: triple treat cookies. You can also do these as a bar. Click here for the recipe.
HUTTERITE COLONY GIVES THANKS: It's been a trying year for one Hutterite colony in Manitoba, but they've put a rough year behind them and have rebuilt. Perhaps the most interesting thing about the article isn't the article, it's a photo that goes with it. One of the Hutterite men is shown playing the guitar. The Amish generally forbid the adoption of instruments, but I wasn't sure where the Hutterites stood on the issue. This photo would seem to be my answer! CHERRY LOVE MUFFINS: Geez, that sounds like pet name or something, but "cherry love muffins" are a recipe from Amish country cook Lee Ann Miller as shown on Fox TV Cleveland this past week. Click here for this Valentine's recipe!
SARA MILLER'S AMISH CORNER: Sara Miller is an Amish author who does a dynamite job covering the Geauga County community for the local Maple Leaf newspaper. Her column appears approximately once a month, I wish it was more! Click here to read her latest installment.
