SARA MILLER'S AMISH CORNER: This is the epitome of an "Amish column." The Budget is the official newspaper of Amish country where Amish "scribes" from across the country shares news, happenings, and comings and goings in their areas. The Budget is very quaint and such a throwback. Sara Miller's column is a throwback to that. Click here to read it.
This sign was on the door at the home nearby Millie's, but it wasn't Millies house. I was mistaken, but the people here knew where Millie lived and directed me. Otto is a VERY common Amish last name here.
MILLIE OTTO'S BACON PEA SALAD AND JIGGLY APPLESAUCE:Â Â Check in with Illinois Amish columnist Millie Otto who shares two recipes this week...the pea and bacon salad is a very common spring salad, the jiggly applesauce is interesting, but what I discovered is an "audio version" of the column at the top, that is kind of fun, like having someone read you a story. Click here.
Sloppy reporting, these are neither Amish or Mennonites....
AMISH PROTESTING IN MINNEAPOLIS? A photo made the rounds this past week of an Amish, or Mennonite, group protesting in Minnesota. SIGH, sloppy journalism. I knew as soon as I saw the photo that they were not Amish. But someone in a newsroom somewhere made an assumption and off the photo went like wildlife with the headline of "Amish protesting"....turns out this is a small church in Wisconsin that has no affiliation to any Plain group. You can see more and hear their singing here.
PENNSYLVANIA BAKED BUTTER BEANS:Â A regional specialty!
HOW DID AMISH SCHOOLS HANDLE THE PANDEMIC: This is an interesting article. If you can read it. The Lancaster newspaper has a very strident paywall that seems to pop up randomly, if you can get to the article, it is an interesting one, but if you can't, well, sorry....annoying paywall. Click here.
LIVINGSTON COUNTY, NEW YORK:  I loved this article that describes the amazing selection of Amish-run stores in the area north of Dansville, New York. I gave a talk once at the library in Dansville, it's a charming little town with a redbrick road that runs through the central business  And it has a blossoming Amish settlement near by chock full of little Amish stores...click here to read more and see the map of Amish businesses.
OLD ORDER MENNONITES TRY TO RETURN TO CHURCH:Â This is a good article about how Old Order Mennonites are attempting to return to worship in the era of COVID-19.
