Time for some Amish in the News, let's see what is going on this week with all things Plain!
AMISH FUNERALS: This article has some very interesting insights that for the most part mesh with my own experiences attending Amish funerals over the years. The issue of organ donation is not one that typically comes up in most Amish communities but apparently it is in Lancaster County. Click here to read more.
HORSE TROUBLE: As the Amish grow in their numbers in rural areas, horses and their needs are causing more and more issues with non-Amish. Click here to read more about it.
INDIANA LANDMARK TO CLOSE? Amish Acres has been a mainstay in northern Indiana for a half century. The place is kind of kitschy (I once spoke with the owner and he himself called it a "tourist trap"), but it also had a charm and did a solid job of educating people about Amish culture in a respectful way. The owner announced Amish Acres would close on Dec 31, but I have my doubts that will happen. Amish Acres is an iconic brand in northern Indiana and I bet a buyer will swoop in. We'll see. You can read more about the fate of Amish Acres here.
SARA MILLER'S AMISH CORNER: Get an authentic slice of Amish life from an Amish woman in Geauga County, Ohio. Sara writes a monthly column for the local paper, here is this month's installment.
MILLIE OTTO'S SMOTHERED CHICKEN BREASTS: Check out another Amish writer, Illinois resident Millie Otto, who talks about her life. This week she writes about her family's early Christmas gathering and shares a delicious-sounding recipe this week. Click here to read and enjoy!
