Mmmm, Pumpkin Whoopie Pies

BRINE, BRINE, EVERYWHERE BRINE: The Amish are among people complaining about the use of “brine” to keep dirt roads in good shape. Apparently tanker trucks are spraying and spreading thousands of gallons of salty “brine,” wastewater from gas and oil well drilling companies onto the roads. The stuff is supposed to keep the roads from getting too dusty and grimy. Man, who thinks up this stuff? Who actually thought “gee, let’s spray wastewater brine all over the place, what a great idea!” Amazing. Click here to read more.
HORSE MANURE – The battle over the Amish and cleaning up after their horses continues in Auburn, Kentucky. The Amish and non-Amish everywhere in the country seem to have managed to live with this issue, but apparently Auburn, Kentucky is different. For whatever reason horse manure is an issue in Auburn but nowhere else. Mystifying. Click here to read more.
AMISH FOR TRUMP: Despite attempts to woo Amish voters into the Trump camp, the efforts appear to have largely fallen flat according to an article in the Canton Repository. Click here to read more.
PUMPKIN COOKIES: Pumpkin cookies are a staple in Amish kitchens, this is a recipe that was in the Manitowoc, Wisconsin newspaper. SIGH, they used to carry The Amish Cook column but dropped it years ago. One of the biggest crowds I ever had for one of my talks was in Manitowoc, maybe rivaled only by the crowd I had once in Plainfield, Indiana. Just wouldn’t get crowds like that today because people simply don’t read the newspaper like they once did. Click here for the recipe.
AMISH SCHOOL IOWA: There was an interesting article in an Iowa newspaper about an Amish school, it was really just a garden-variety feature article, but interesting how it mentioned this brand new Amish school with built-in living quarters for the young teachers. I’ve not run across that before, could be a newer trend perhaps in smaller Amish settlements that have to bring Amish teachers in from other communities. Click here to read more.
PENNSYLVANIA DUTCH WHOOPIE PIES: Mmmm, whoever thought of infusing whoopie pies with the amazing taste of pumpkin is a genius. Click here for the recipe.
SALEM, ARKANSAS AMISH SCHOOL FUND-RAISER: Oh wow, I wish I was near here..if you are anywhere in the Ozarks, put this benefit supper on your calendar for Thursday…Salem is east of Mountain Home, Arkansas near the Missouri border. I’m not familiar with this Amish community at all, so I’d really love to hear from someone who attends this. Arkansas has, historically, had a very small Amish population.
