Amish in the News: Ex-Amish Struggling, Troyers of Asheville, Amish Doughnuts, and More

There's an interesting mix of Amish in the News today.

BREAKING BRIDGES:  This is a fascinating story by the managing editor of the Bedford, Indiana newspaper.   The article describes the odyssey of an Amish couple who left the Amish and are struggling to find their footing in mainstream society.  It is an interesting article.  Notice it  was written by Krystal Shetler who herself is married to an ex-Amish man so the article is written with great nuance and context. Click here.

ASHEVILLE AMISH:  Well, not really. This is a review of one of these "Amish style" shops that are becoming more and more popular in non-Amish areas.  At least these owners seem to have some connection to the culture. Click here.

AMISH DOUGHNUTS:  Man, have any of our readers in Florida tried doughnuts from this place?  I'd love to try these doughnuts.  Peachy is a name that is common in some Amish settlements and I bet these doughnuts are rooted in their rich culinary traditions.  Click here to read about these Amish doughnuts that can be found in Florida.

WINTER IN AN AMISH HOME:  Arlene Schmidt, an Old Order Amish homemaker in Indiana, writes an excellent weekly column for the New Castle newspaper.  This month's installment really gives the flavor of winter life in an Amish home. Check it out here.

MICHIGAN MAN LIVES WITH AMISH FAMILY FOR THREE DAYS:  This article was interesting and something that many people would love to do and his essay and photos make for fascinating read, but, sheesh, did he really just arrive at this place and ask them "Hey, can I stay with you for three days?"  You'd think he'd had to have had some sort of prior contact with them...I don't know...check it out, though, here.
