Okay, we have a variety of stuff in our Amish in the News segment, so let’s get right to it.
DOWN UNDER AMISH? No, there are no Amish in Australia or New Zealand yet. There are some peripheral Plain groups in Australia and I do think someday – 50 years from now – the Amish might settle in Australia. But there was an article in a New Zealand paper that had me scratching my head. Must be a slow news time there because a New Zealand paper ran an article about the Amish but the thrust of the sourcing was done from a few anonymous postings on Reddit. The comments ascribed to Eli just struck me as a total red flag. The Amish do not “loathe” outsiders as”Eli” claims. Just a bizarre article, would love to know the editor’s thinking in publishing. TOP 3 STOPS IN LANCASTER COUNTY? This was a decent article and provides some good insights for someone visiting Amish country. She only mentions three possible stops out of dozen and dozens and dozens and dozens, so I might get to differ on which ones I would tell you to stop at if I only could tell you 3….it probably wouldn’t be these three, but these choices definitely aren’t bad ones. Check out the author’s article here.
HOW TO COOK LIKE THE AMISH? This is another kind of head-scratcher. Popular Mechanics Magazine ran a piece entitled “How to Cook like the Amish.” Really, it was just a “advertorial” for Lehman’s, the wonderful, sprawling hardware store in Ohio’s Amish Country. Awesome place, but it really doesn’t cater to the Amish nearly as much as it does to homesteaders, tourists, camping enthusiasts, and others. And if I were going to pick four kitchen implements the Amish depend on, I’m not certain it would be these four….check it out here.
SESAME DILL FISH: I was happy to see this recipe in the “My Amish Home” column by Millie Otto in Illinois. Fishing is a pasttime among the Amish but recipes for fish prep aren’t as common, so this sounds like a yummy one. Click here.
CHEESY EGG PIE – “Egg pies” are common in Amish kitchens This is a simple custard, type quiche, that isn’t an Amish recipe per se, but know you’ll see meals like this prepared in many Amish kitchens. Click here.
Tragedies that underscore the inherent dangers in Amish life, all of these are just from the past week, thoughts and prayers to all involved!:
Fire destroys long-time Amish welding shop. Wow, the pictures here are dramatic, but the pulling together of the community is even more son.
