Love in Charm: I’m not sure quite what to make of movies like this. The only thing I can really come up with is that they are very “comforting.” I can’t say I watch these, but I can see how they would be comforting. As someone who studies Amish culture, I’d probably find the movies kitschy, but if you want wholesome entertainment in the mold of Touched by an Angel or 7th Heaven, this movie is probably for———————————–you. Mennonite Gowns: This story was a tear-jerker – for me – for mixed reasons. On one hand, this was just a sad article….but there is also a happy tear-jerker part…it is comforting to know that there are just such good people out there who would take their time and talents to provide some measure of comfort during a time of what would be crushing grief. So click here to read a story about a Mennonite church sewing circle that makes gowns and caps for newborns that die at birth.
Amish Doughnuts: Boy, I don’t know about this one..maybe I’m just jaded…but this business in Indiana selling Amish-made doughnuts? The owner drives 5 hours (round trip) to an Amish bakery in northern Indiana so he can resell them in central in Indiana. I applaud the guy’s resourcefulness and ambition, but the part I am jaded about is whether it can make money. I mean, a doughnut is, what, a buck maybe? I just can’t image that you’d sell enough doughnuts to pay for all that gas, building rent, salaries, etc. It’s one thing to run a doughnut shop locally and make them from scratch…I doubt there’s much margin in that either, but, sheesh…anyway, I wish the guy well, you can read more about the doughnut shop, Amish Indiana, here.
Raymond the Amish Comic: This guy seems like he would be really funny. I’m not someone
who roars with laughter at very coarse language, etc. Now, lest anyone label me a prude, here’s why: as a writer I just find material that relies exclusively on four letter words to be very lazy. I mean, I guess an occasional well-time “f” bomb might be funny, but for the most part I just find it not funny. I’ve watched movies before where every other word was the “F” word….how uncreative. To me, really good comedy should set you laughing without relying on bad language. But, that is just me…I know a lot of people find that sort of thing funny. Anyway, Raymond seems like he could be hilarious…I’d love to watch him sometime…click here to read an article.
Amish Mysteries: These might be some Amish-themed fiction books that I’d enjoy: some Amish mysteries. I might have to buy one and review it here. These are Amish-themed mysteries set in Holmes County, Ohio, written by P.L. Gaus, a retired chemistry professor from Wooster College. This article describes the premise of many of Gaus’s novels as being built around the fact that the Amish are distrustful of the law and of the police and that is a premise that I don’t find to be necessarily true. But it seems as if Gaus’s novels might have enough threads of non-fiction runing through them that I might enjoy them. And I guess I am more of an action/mystery type person than sappy romance novel type , so maybe I will check out some of Gaus’s work. Click here to read more.
