Amish in the News: Millie's Buster Bar Dessert, Amish and Asthma, Mennonite Store and More!

BUSTER BAR DESSERT:  I occasionally like to check in with Millie Otto an Amish writer in Illinois who has a weekly column. Her column appears in a couple of newspapers out there and is not affiliated with this website.  Anyway, this week Millie shares a recipe for "Buster Bar Dessert."  Check out her column and recipe here.

AMISH MAN SENTENCED:  We've been following this story and it's just tragic.  There is no divorce in the Amish church and, well, I'm no fan of divorce but I'm even less a fan of bumping off one's spouse to escape a bad marriage but that is exactly what one Amish man in Missouri did. Very, very unusual case.  Even more so because his crime would have gone undetected had he not confessed out of the blue. Click here to read more.

MENNONITE STORE:  I am not sure which interested me more, the article about the Mennonite store or the fact that the newspaper the article appears in claims to be the smallest daily newspaper in the USA...a claim I find hard to believe...Tyron, South Carolina as the smallest? I have my doubts...anyway, click here to read about a neat Mennonite bulk food and spice store that has opened up there.

HUTTERITE HISTORY IN MANITOBA: For those interested in the Hutterites, this is a good read about the history of the group in Manitoba. For newbies here, the Hutterites are a lot like the Amish and Mennonites but they live communally.  In the US, South Dakota is home to the most Hutterite colonies.  Click here to read.

AMISH AND ASTHMA: This is a story that has been making the rounds the past few days, a new study that links Amish and farm life in general with decreased asthma risk....this is a good read for anyone who feels the impacts of asthma. Click here to read.
