We have a full slate of stories in this week's Amish in the News so let's get right to it!
NEW IN OHIO'S AMISH COUNTRY: Â I have mixed emotions (not that anyone is asking me) about the growth in Holmes County, Ohio. Â I mean, if I want a brew pub there are a gazillon other places I could go. Â The idea of trying my favorite craft beers in Holmes County doesn't necessarily excite me (and my objection has nothing to do with alcohol itself...I enjoy a good beer as to many Amish). Â I just think there's a danger of the area losing its distinct cultural identity. Â If Holmes County becomes too much like everywhere else, then why go to Holmes County? Â Anyway, click here to read about some of the new additions to Holmes County.
AMISH AND GUNS:  This is an area where there is wide difference of opinion among the Amish (and, sheesh, you could say the same for the general populace).  The Amish, traditionally, pacifists. This means that among some Amish there is a deep-seeded objection to guns on principle.  Yet, the Amish are also a self-sufficient group and hunting can be a great part of maintaining that sense of self-sufficiency.  And guns are a great way to hunt.  Sooo....the cultures collide.  An Amish man is suing (unusual in itself, but not as much when it comes to liberty issues) because  of the photo ID requirement when buying a gun.  Fascinating case. LANCASTER COUNTY GROWTH: Â This article is interesting just because it appeared on an Asian news website. Â It just shows the international interest and reach of the Amish. Â Click here to read this interesting piece.
HUTTERITE TURKEYS:Â The Hutterites are a similar religious group to the Amish, but they live communally. Â Raising turkeys in a humane, free-range setting has become big business. Hutterite turkeys are sought after, prized birds on thanksgiving tables acroscs the west. Â The season is ramping up right now. Â Read more here.
HUTTERITE COLONY SCHOOL LIFE: Â This is really a charming and wonderful photo collection from a Hutterite school in South Dakota. These photos are absolutely worth your time to peruse, check them out here.
