Amish in the News: Treehouses, Rhubarb Bread, Vaccines, an More!

    Published: Apr 14, 2021 · Updated: Apr 14, 2021 by Kevin Williams | Leave a Comment

It's been awhile since we've done Amish in the News, so I thought we'd take a whirl through the news sites to see if there is anything Amish afoot. It's actually been pretty quiet, but there are a few interesting nuggets:

VACCINATING THE AMISH: There is a lot of hesitancy among the Amish to get vaccinated and healthcare workers are trying to get ahead of that, with mixed success. Here's an excerpt:

Larry Mast, an Amish man from Millersburg, says there’s no way he’s ever getting a COVID-19 vaccine.

Mast, who was in Topeka running errands Thursday afternoon, said he just doesn’t trust that the vaccines are safe. What’s more, he isn’t particularly convinced that COVID-19 even warrants a vaccine.

“I really don’t think there’s a whole lot to this COVID,” Mast said of the virus. “It’s a political thing, I think. I mean, why have a vaccine if it’s just another flu? COVID is an overrated form of the flu in my opinion.”

There's just a lot of hesitancy and libertarian leanings among the Amish, you can read more of this article here.

RETURN TO AMISH, SEASON 6: I don't follow this show at all. Not one bit. But I know it does have an audience. The show is a vestige of the big Amish reality TV craze of a decade or so ago. I did get to know Mama Mary Schmucker during that time, we had a long, long phone chat once. But she - fortunately, I think - seems to have slipped out of the show. Here's an update.

OLD ORDER MENNONITE MEMOIRS: I love the writings of this Old Order Mennonite grandmother in Pennsylvania. Let's check in on her Easter Sunday here.

MILLIE OTTO'S RHUBARB BREAD: Check out Millie Otto, an Amish columnist in Illinois. I've met Millie before and she's a funny, witty woman with a lot of energy and perspective. She gives a window into life in the Arthur, Illinois settlement. Click here to read Millie's latest and a recipe for homemade Rhubarb Bread.

TREEHOUSES IN AMISH COUNTRY: Man, this sounds like such a refreshing escape. If you are seeking a refuge that seems to be pretty COVID safe, check out this Amish-made retreat in Ohio's Amish Country!
