Amish in the News: Victory in Wisconsin, St. Ignatius Amish Auction, Amish Burglaries, Ontario Mennonites, and Doughnut Bars

A full slate of Amish in the News this week, so let's get right into it:

VICTORY IN WISCONSIN:  We've been monitoring the situation around Eau Claire where the Amish were repeatedly running afoul of local laws requiring the installation of smoke detectors in the house.  I think everyone should have a working smoke detector. But if you don't want one, well, I guess that is your right.  I'm never comfortable with legislating common sense.  And in this case common sense has prevailed, the Amish have been granted a waiver by the state to opt out of the smoke detector and other onerous building code laws.  Problem solved. Everyone is happy. Click here to read more.

    St. Ignatius Amish Auction

    St. Ignatius Amish Auction

ST. IGNATIUS AMISH AUCTION:   Read about the annual school fund-raiser auction held in the Amish settlement of St. Ignatius.   This place tops my list as the most beautiful Amish settlement with the dramatic Mission Mountains as a backdrop. Click here to read about the auction.

MAMA MARY'S BED & BREAKFAST: Return to Amish's Mama Mary Schmucker may open a bed & breakfast?  Well...interesting.  Click here to read more.

ONTARIO MENNONITES:  I'd love to read this book: In Search of Promised Lands about the Mennonites in Ontario, but, holy cow, $69.99 for the book!?!?  I think I'll wait until it is my local library and check it out!  You can read more here.

MORE MILLIE -  Amish writer Millie Otto hits the road this week and shares a recipe for homemade "doughnut bars".   Millie's style is definitely more modern than any of the Amish Cook writers have had over the years, but I think she projects an aura of openness that is interesting.  Click here to read her latest and get her recipe for "doughnut bars."
