A newspaper in Nebraska had a headline: "World's Only Female Amish Doctor" to visit town and give a talk. Amish doctor? Well, that maybe needs some clarification. From what little I can find out about her online, she is Beachy Amish Mennonite. Now, that does not make her any less of an accomplished or fascinating person. Nor does it make her, in my view, "less Amish." Outsiders tend to "rank Amish" as the ones who use horse-and-buggy, don't use phones, don't have plumbing, etc are somehow "more Amish" and those who have more technology are "less Amish." That's a hugely oversimplified and inaccurate view of the Amish. The Beachy Amish Mennonites...well, are they Amish? Or are they Mennonites? Does it matter? Even some Beachys have trouble answering that question although I think the consensus is that they are Mennonites, but they blend both churches. Anyway, Jana Nisly seems like a fascinating woman. Read about her Nebraska talk here. And visit her clinic website here. Dr. Nisly runs a clinic in El Salvador.

We have a similar doctor up here in NW Ohio, Dr. Laverne Miller, Hicksville, Ohio. He's what a lot in this area call "car Amish".........

Interesting! Hicksville's Amish settlement is one of my list that I need to hit soon...
