Amish in the News: Amish Insulated Against Heart Attacks, Measles Update, and Kutztown Folk Festival

    Published: Jun 24, 2014 · Updated: Jun 24, 2014 by Kevin Williams | Leave a Comment

MORE MEASLES:  There have been a lot of articles about the Amish measles outbreak in Ohio, but this NPR piece is worth reading because it delves a bit deeper.  Sort of puts a more human element into the story.  Of course vaccines seem to be a topic that is very polarizing on both sides among Amish and non-Amish.  The Amish, like the general population, have varying views.  Click here to read more.  What do you think about the vaccination campaign?

KUTZTOWN FOLK FESTIVAL: One of these days I will make it to this showcase festival.  This really is THE place to learn about the often intertwined history of the Amish and Pennsylvania Dutch.  You can experience the festival through food, arts, crafts, etc....wonderful event.  Click here for the basics, and click here to check out the festival's website.

HEART ATTACKS AND THE AMISH:  Studies seem to show that 1 - 20 Amish have some sort of "genetic protection" against heart attacks (compared with 1 - 120 in the general population). Click here for an interesting article.

LANCASTER COUNTY RESIDENTS PUSH-BACK AGAINST REALITY TV SHOWS:  This is probably not a bad thing.  I mean, the root cause is people watching these shows, not Lancaster Countians aiding and abetting them.   My biggest problem about the shows is that the networks market them as "reality", if they were marketed as scripted dramas (that is what they are...or in the parlance of the industry "heavily produced") then I'd have no problem with them.  I still wouldn't want them because they are't my thing but at least I'd rest easy knowing that most people know the shows are completely fake.  Read what Lancaster County residents are doing here.
