Amish in the News: Barn Tragedy, Amish and the IRS tax credit, Millie's Sheetcake, and More!

It's been fairly uneventful in Amish news over the past week or so.  And that is the way they like it.  Still, there are a few items of note.

BARN TRAGEDY:  I think this story resonates with me because the Amish man who died was 46, my age. H was reaching for a board in this barn and somehow fell 18 feet and probably the way he fell, perhaps onto his back, was just too much of a hit to survive.   Very sad, read more about it here.

BLUFFTON UNIVERSITY LECTURE: Bluffton University is a college near Lima, Ohio and there will be a program there this Sunday from a college professor and a Hutterite schoolteacher.  The program will explore Hutterite and Anabaptist pacifism.  If I were able to get a babysitter, I’d go to this presentation, I think it’d be fascinating to hear from a Hutterite in her own words. Click here for more information.

22 Amish church districts mean that there is plenty of business to go around for the many harness shops here in the Arthur community where Millie Otto lives

MY AMISH HOME:  Millie Otto is an Illinois Amish writer who pens a column that runs in several papers in that state.  Let's check in with her this week and her delicious-sounding recipe for a chocolate sheet cake. Wow. Click here.

AMISH GREEN BEAN AND BACON SALAD:  There are several delicious sounding green bean recipes in this post, the one that caught my attention was an Amish recipe for green bean and bacon salad, check it out here.

AMISH MIGHT MISS OUT ON CHILD TAX CREDIT:  And considering the size of most Amish families, that could add up. Click here to read more.

BUTTERSCOTCH PEANUT BUTTER RICE KRISPIE TREATS:  This recipe comes to us from the Geauga County Maple Leaf, a weekly newspaper in Ohio Amish Country east of Cleveland.  The author of this column said one of her Amish friends gave her this recipe and even though it is just Rice Krispie treats, wow, they still sound amazing.
