Amish in the News: Chicken Corn Chowder, Millie's Chicken and Rice Supper, Amish Bank on Vermont, and More!

WELCOME TO VERMONT:  The Amish have been putting down roots in Vermont over the past year or so and I think that trend will continue.  A local bank has helped roll out the welcome mat by putting up a hitching post.  Being that the Amish are so new to the area, something that would scarcely merit a mention in the papers in, say, Holmes County, Ohio, is news in Vermont.  Click here to read about the new hitching post in town.

CHICKEN CORN CHOWDER:   A winter version of the popular chicken corn soup, but a chowder is thicker and heartier to withstand the cold Midwestern winter.  Click here for this amazing recipe!

MILLIE'S CHICKEN-RICE DINNER:  Check out Illinois columnist Millie Otto and her newspaper column as she shares a hearty chicken and rice supper.  Millie lives in the Amish community around Arthur, Illinois. Click here.

Blue cheese crumbles are made in the Amish-operated plant.

AMISH AND BLUE CHEESE:  I love this story in a Wisconsin newspaper because I have been to this cheese factory.  If you ever see the Salemville cheese brand in the grocery store, it is the "real deal", made and produced by skilled Amish cheesemakers in the Salemville factory. The only non-Amish part of the factory is the ownership, but they pretty much stand aside and let the Amish cheesemakers do their thing. It is a wonderful operation. Click here to read more.  You can read about my visit to this plant here.

SARA MILLER'S AMISH CORNER:  I love this Amish writer's dispatches from the Geauga County, Ohio newspaper.  Sara Miller contributes a monthly column and her writing is probably the most reminiscent of the Amish pieces in the Budget newspaper.  You just get this really nice home feel and rich descriptions. Click here to read Sara's latest.
