Amish in the News: Creamy Fruit Salad, Leaving the Amish, Friendship Bread, and More!

We have a slate of Amish-themed stories as we kick off the new year so let's see what is making headlines!

LEAVING THE AMISH:  The Huffington Post, UK edition, has an essay from Saloma Furlong about her experience breaking from the Amish.   Saloma Furlong has put herself out there a lot and her story is riveting and compelling but it is HER story. I think that gets lost in a lot of these "leaving the Amish" stories.... I think the stories are less reflective of the Amish and more of the individual families they are leaving.  For instance, if someone leaves an abusive Presbyterian family, well, the story is about the family not about all Presbyterians.  Hope that makes sense. Click here to read Saloma's story.

MILLIE'S CREAMY FRUIT SALAD:    Mmmm, this just doesn't strike me as a very seasonal dish, but, hey, it is such an icebox outside a splash of spring fruit might be just the thing to shake the winter blahs.  Click here to check out the latest from Illinois Amish columnist Millie Otto and her recipe for creamy fruit salad.

MEET THE JANTZIS:   These are some superb, superb photos from Canada's National Post.  The photographer spent some time with the Jantzi family who are Amish Mennonites.  Amish Mennonites are a bit more progressive than Old (or even new) Order Amish.  I have always found the Amish Mennonite church to be extraordinarily welcoming and warm.  Click here to see a superb photo spread of life in the Jantzi home.

PENNSYLVANIA DUTCH PICTURE BOOK:  There's been a lot published lately about efforts to preserve the Pennsylvania Dutch language.  The latest comes in the form of a picture book.  Looks pretty interesting. Click here to find out more.

EASY AMISH FRIENDSHIP BREAD AND STARTER:   NPR devoted some air time to Amish Friendship Bread and the middle of an icy winter seems like a great time to embrace the bread. Click here to read more and get the bread and starter recipes!
