    Amish in the News: Forced Electric? Chicken-Biscuit Stew, and More!

    FORCED ELECTRIC:  Hmmmm, I don't know, this Pennsylvania court ruling troubles me a bit.  Basically, a divided Commonwealth Court decided that a Pennsylvania Amish family had to hook up to the grid.  An article excerpt:

    For years, the Yoders have been fighting the sewer connection order because it requires them to install an electric grinder pump to shunt waste from their home into the Sugar Grove Area Sewer Authority's system in Warren County.

    For me, it is the court's reasoning which is the most troubling.  Basically the judges say that because this Amish family has used electricity before, then this sewage issue shouldn't be an issue.  But - and I sure hope the defense had expert testimony to this effect - the issue with the Amish is never that electricity itself is bad, it is the "grid" that is the "enemy" in their eyes.  The Amish "cherry pick" technology that suits their lifestyle and beliefs and while I'm all for safe sewage I'm not sure if forcing them onto the grid is the way....Click here to read the full story.
