Amish in the News: Millie's Graham Cracker Pudding, Amish Youth Donate, Buggy Crash, and More!

Got some interesting stories in today's News round-up, so sit back and enjoy!

AMISH YOUTH DONATE:  The Amish youth group in St. Ignatius has donated two defibrillators to the community as a goodwill gesture.  As someone who studies Amish culture, I find this interesting.  CAPTION:  An Amish buggy moves towards the school and community building in the St. Ignatius Amish settlement, the school and building is the hub of youth activity there.

The Amish of St. Ignatius are New Order horse and buggy Amish and they have a much more evangelical and mission-oriented approach.  You simply wouldn't find an Amish youth group among the Old Order Amish doing such charitable actions, they - and this isn't a judgment on my part - just are too inward-looking.  Click here to read the article.

BUGGY ACCIDENT:  This was an interesting article just because, one, it illustrates just how easily things can go wrong with a horse-and-buggy, I think the author of the article did a good job explaining.  Secondly, geez, I had never even heard of Manitoulin.  It's not like I've heard of everyplace, but I think I've heard of most places.  Especially places where there are Amish, but this is a new community and it is on Manitoulin Island in Lake Huron in Canada, far,far to the north...I'm going to have to put visiting this settlement on my "wish list."  Anyway, click here to read this interesting article.

AMISH FOLK ART - Well, this is fascinating.  If you are in Update New York, a local art gallery has put some Swartzentruber Amish-made items into an exhibit.  I think that is an awesome idea and I wish more places would do something like this.  Click here to read more.

AMISH HERBALIST SENTENCING DATE APPROACHING -  You know, this story is troubling in many ways.  Yes, the Amish herbalist probably was improperly mislabeling stuff and it sounds like maybe he didn't handle everything in the way that it should be handled, but I'm not sure that the remedy is turning him into a criminal.  It just seems like there could have been a better way to handle this on the part of the government, the way they are doing it just makes them look bad.  Click here to read more.

GRAHAM CRACKER PUDDING:  Check out the latest from Illinois Amish columnist Millie Otto, including a recipe for Graham Cracker Pudding.  Yum. Click here for her latest and the recipe!
