REXFORD WOES: Â Superb coverage by the Missoulian newspaper about the horrible forest fires that have ravaged Montana. Â I've been trying to get accurate on-the-ground information about the fire effects. Â I did hear from Duane Hostetler who lives in the community and here is what he had to say:
Signs point the way to Rexford....
To visit Rexford you have to cross this bridge over Lake Koocanusa
"This fire went through a very tight knit community the losses were roughly half Amish & half non Amish," Hostetler said. Â The Missoulian article picks up on that with some great interviews and information. Click here.
YODERS CELEBRATE 300 YEARS IN AMERICA: Â This is quite the family reunion! Â The name Yoder, of course, is synonymous with the Amish, read more about the history of the name here and who was celebrating!
DOCTORS TO THE AMISH: Â This is an interesting article about two doctors who treat the Amish.....hard for me to provide much of a summary here, but if you are a nurse or a doctor or just interested in how the Amish respond to modern medicine, this article is for you! Click here.
HUTTERITE LEADER:  Now I found this article fascinating because I truly learned something new.  The Amish do not have a "pope", i.e. a central spiritual leader.  There area  few Amish men who have tried to sort of claim that mantel over the years, but there's not an official position.  The Mennonite church has more of a hierarchy, but the Old Order horse and buggy Mennonites are generally left out of it.  The Hutterites?  Well turns out they do have a spiritual leader and he just passed away.
