Amish in the News: Tragedies, Recipes, and Stars

I guess the title sums it up best....been a tough week in the Amish community with, it seems, a lot of late-summer accidents that highlight how, while peaceful, Amish life also is inherently dangerous at times.

Have a whole, unfortunately, menu of tragedies this past week.  Let's start out in Upstate New York's "North Country":

TWO AMISH MEN DROWN: two Amish men who had gone for an afternoon of fishing never returned after their boat capsized.  Click here to read more.  A second story about the incident can be read here.

The Byler home aflame - Nancy Ash photo, Sharon Herald.

AMISH HOUSE FIRE:  No injuries, so that is good...an Amish house caught fire in Pennsylvania...sheesh, this Amish family broke cardinal rule #1 of a burning house: get out.  But the Byler family kept trying to salvage belongings even after flames were shooting through the roof. Click here to read more.

HIT AND RUN AT BUGGY:  This is another story where, amazingly, there were no injuries...click here to read more and keep an eye out for that car!

MAN PLEADS NOT GUILTY OF SWERVING AT BUGGIES AND CAUSING FATAL CRASH:  Sounds pretty guilty to me....click here.

    Now, on some lighter notes:

RETURN TO AMISH: Carmela and Jeremiah are back together.  Who cares? I don't. But I know a lot of people do follow this fiction Amish-themed series, so, if you do, here's the scoop.

RECIPES:  The Quincy, Illinois paper was the first in the USA to carry The Amish Cook column starting back in 1991 and they still carry it to this day.  These recipes aren't Amish per se, but this is a wonderful profile of a local cook and she was nice enough to share a bunch of recipes: sauerkraut casserole, egg roll in a bowl,  Super Potato Soup, and more! Click here to enjoy!
