Okay, this week's edition of Amish in the News is today and there are some interesting and tasty tidbits to share. So let's get right to it!
Lots of Amish in the News this week!
VERENIKE:  Okay, I'll admit. I had never heard of this dish before. I've been to Mennonite and Amish communities all over the USA and Canada and somehow this one slipped through my radar: Verenike. Must be a very regional thing because two articles appeared in the news the past week or so that mentioned Verenike and both were in Nebraska. One in Aurora and one in Henderson, communities in the central part of the state. Verenike, and a host of other foods, are served at an annual German Smorgsabord in Henderson each year and if you happen to be near Aurora, you can get in on some Vereneke today and tomorrow. And if you are nowhere near central Nebraska, you can get a recipe for Verenike here. It sounds like a savory fried pie covered with ham gravy.
THIEF CAUGHT:Â A thief ransacking Amish businesses was caught and will spend a long time behind bars. Click here to read more.
ONE HOT COOKIE: Hmmmm, not sure what to make of this. A chain of cookie restaurants (I do know what I make of that, I love cookies, so this place is on my radar) in the Youngstown, Ohio and Pittsburgh, PA area will open its first franchised outlet in, of all places, Berlin, Ohio. Berlin is a wonderful tourist destination but that seems like a curious place to open simply because wouldn't there be so much competition of Amish bakeries there? I'm not sure if I'd want to enter the Berlin market with a bakery.....I mean, the place sounds amazing, just not sure if Berlin is the place...Click here to read more and if you've been to One Hot Cookie let us know what you think! Man, click on their menu and look at their Extreme Reese's Peanut Butter Cup Cookie. WOW, that looks amazing, although for $3.95 for a single cookie, it better be!
MARTYR'S MIRROR:Â This is the classic written history of the Anabaptists and a Bluffton University archivist will present a talk about the book on April 6, click here for more information!
AMISH EASTER HAM LOAF:Â There are other recipes in this post like barley vegetable soup with ham,but what really caught my eye in this post from the Cleveland Plain Dealer is an old Marcia Adams recipe for Amish ham loaf with basting gravy. Perfect for Easter! Check it out here.
