I've been on a peanut butter kick lately, so when Rachel asked me what kind of cake I wanted for my birthday, my gaze settled on a "peanut butter cake" recipe from my Amish archives. Imagine a Reese's Cup in a cake form.  The recipe I am going to share with you creates just that, a mix of chocolately-peanutty bliss!:)  So we went to one of my favorite nearby nature parks  for a birthday picnic (SIGH, turned 41 on August 30th).  The weather was typical summery, but with a decent breeze and no rain to spoil the picnic.  Some of you may have read in an earlier post that my wife has a broken hand, so mother-in-law was enlisted to create the cake.  It turned out as delicious as I had hoped!
And now to share the recipe with you. Â You might even be able to dot the top of the cake with miniature Reese's Cups, although some might call that overkill (but not me:)
- Cake:
- 1 /4 cup soft margarine
- 1 /4 cup peanut butter
- 1 1 /2 cup brown sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1 / 2 cup warm water
- 1 cup thick, sour milk
- 2 cups flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- Frosting:
- 2 tablespoons peanut butter
- 1 cup chocolate chips
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- CAKE:
- Mix together in a large mixing bowl for several minutes. Pour into two greased and floured 9 inch layer pans or a 9 X 13 pan. Bake at 350 for 25 to 30 minutes.
- FROSTING:
- Melt butter, peanut butter, and chips over low heat, blend in other ingredients until thick and creamy and spread on cool cake.

Can you use buttermilk instead of sour milk? If not how do you make thick sour milk? Thanks Lissa
Kevin
Yes, Lissa, you can use buttermilk...that is what we did for this cake, in fact. But you can sour milk by adding a tablespoon of vinegar to a cup of milk

Happy Birthday again, Kevin.
we;;, you must have a good relationship with your MIL to get that cake baked for your birthday. Since I have an allergy to chocolate I am going to try my mothers recipe for a brown sugar frosting on it.

Thanks for a great recipe as this cake was very good. The only thing I did different was add a little milk to the frosting because due to its thickness, it was hard to spread. Both cake and frosting had a very nice flavor and not dry. Will definitely be making again.

Thanks, Rosemary, glad you liked it!
