I picked up a small booklet earlier this year written by two Amish sisters packed full of home remedies. I do believe in the value of wisdom passed down through the generations that pre-date the emergence of modern medicine. Of course, it's "buyer beware." Some of these books (I've collected several over the years) make claims for curing cancer (capitalism is such a part of our culture that if someone finds a cure, we'd know. It'd be scooped up, marketed and someone would make a mint and hopefully a lot of lives saved). So some of the "remedies" I look at with suspicion or amusement, others may have merit. You be the judge on these (required legalese: use remedies at your own risk, myself or Amish365.com assume no liability):
BEE STINGS: apply Clorox. This will take out the pain and swelling. Then apply baking soda, vinegar, alum powder or ammonia. Any of these will neutralize the poison.
WILD HAIR IN EYES: This one perplexed me and if it's an actual condition that causes problems I am not making light of it, but that is the actual entry in the book "Wild Hair In Eyes" and here is the cure: bath the eyes with boric acid solution. Use a mild soap to wash face. Rub honey on the hair on eyelid.
SUN BURN: You can put either lemon juice or vinegar in bath water. This will help neutralize acid on skin. You can put baking soda on burns with good results.
HICCUPS: a teaspoon of pure apple cider vinegar. If that doesn't work, close your eyes, finger and press gently on your eyeball for 10 minutes. Release. Repeat if necessary. Other hiccup remedies:
take a deep breath.
Smell dill seed
Try eating a little peanut butter.
1 tablespoon of vinegar in 1 /2 glass of water has worked
Hold breath as long as you can. Try honey.
So, those are some home remedies you can try. Seems everyone has their own "cure" for hiccups. I grew up hearing from my Dad that the way to stop hiccups is to drink 9 sips of water. Not 10 or 11 sips, not 8, but 9. I did seem to work, but who's to say 8 sips or 10 wouldn't work? I don't know because I never tried, only drank 9! Do you have a surefire "cure" for hiccups you'd like to share?

One of my older brothers told my younger brother and I that if you stood on your head and took a drink of water,it would cure hiccups. Of course,he was "older and smarter" so we believed him! I dare you to try that one..we did..but that was MANY years ago!!

re the wild hair. since it references the eyelid, I am thinking it is either when one has an eyelash that is lost and goes into the area with the eye. also, I have known of ingrown eyelash hairs that actually grow backwards and because of it there is abrasion of the surface of the eyeball.

I have a hiccup remedy that seems to work for me all the time and most of the time for my husband. Drink some water, but don't swallow yet - bend over at the waist with your head hanging down and then swallow. Seems to do the trick. My husband tried to show me how drinking from the opposite side of a glass would work, but after I burst into laughter at the sight of his wet shirt he decided maybe my method made more sense.

wild hair in the eye is refering to a sty that iritates the eye. my grandmother would use cotten with warm milk to wash the eye for a sty and also for a cold in the eye. to wash the paste that was causing eye to be pasted shut.

That is interesting, thank you for clearing that up. I've heard of a sty, I just never heard it referred to by the other name

My mom used to take a tomato leaf and rub the leaf on a bee sting until the skin turned green that takes the sting out of it.

Vickie, interesting tip, thanks!
