    Amish Summer Meal Scenes

    Published: Jun 25, 2014 · Updated: Jun 25, 2014 by Kevin Williams | 4 Comments

I've had meals in many Amish and Brethren homes over the years. The cooking and baking styles are similar: scratch-made food and simple.  You generally won't find lobster bisque or peach flambe on the menus at an Amish home.  But you will find plenty of simple deliciousness:  homemade breads, fresh meats, and garden vegetables.

I was going through and organizing archives today and I found these unpublished photos.  I think my parents took them when they were visiting Lovina's once.   As you would expect, Lovina is a great cook and these meal scenes illustrate that!  The barbecued chicken looks the meat will just fall off the bone, fluffy mashed potatoes, gravy, and some bread and pie to top it off! That's a meal I'm sorry I missed.  The final two photos are from a meal that I enjoyed at an Amish home in Unity, Maine during the summer.  There was no meat served at that meal.  It was more of a locovore feast, fresh cantaloupe, tomatoes, and potatoes from the garden.  Tomato and cheese sandwiches were enjoyed on thick slices of homemade bread.

Amish meals generally offer a lot of variety, but they are striking in their scratch simplicity.   So get ready for your mouth to water and savor these summer supper scenes!summermeal3 (1)summermeal1 (1)summermeal2 (1)summermeal4 (1)summermainemealsummermainemeal2

Beautiful food pictures Kevin. I especially like the picture of the loaves of bread and pie. And that chicken sure does look delicious!

Nothing much better than a salt shaker with some cantaloupe and tomatoes. The BBQ chicken looks wonderful, too!
