This Amish yogurt chicken recipe is in my archives from years ago and here are my notes about it:
This recipe is from an Amish woman in Ohio. I had the opportunity to watch her make homemade yogurt when I was at her house. One of her uses for yogurt? Using it to dress up baked chicken. She swore up and down it made for a very moisty, tasty bird.
SIGH, you know what? I have zero memory of this. I've been to a gazillion Amish homes over the years in a gazillion different places but, yeah, zero memory of this. Ugh. I remember being in an Amish settlement in Texas and watching yogurt making, but not in Ohio. I have a vague memory of where this might have been, but, basically, I am clueless. Thanks, memory.
This is the part where you combine the yogurt, cheese, and seasonings. Many Amish cooks make their own homemade yogurt. Making yogurt is relatively easy, and can just be used in so many different dishes to add flavor. You can add yogurt to chicken, such as this recipe. But yogurt can also be stirred into baked goods for added flavoring and bulk. Yogurt can be added into casseroles in much the same way that sour cream can, but yogurt is packed with protein and other nutrients, so in addition to a flavor booster you're getting added health benefits.
🙋 FAQ
Yes. Sour cream will give you a similar texture and flavor, maybe without some of the health boosts that yogurt boasts, but, still, the taste will be quite similar. Just swap sour cream with yogurt using the same measurements. They'll swap out just fine.
Bake for 45 minutes until the yogurt coating starts to brown up. No need to turn the chicken during baking. I always think a sprinkle of paprika does well in adding color to the chicken, it wasn't done in this dish, though. Generally, as I've written many times before, Amish cooks don't have a deeply stocked cabinet of spices, it's just nothing something part of Amish culinary culture.
The chicken pairs well with some vegetables, noodles, rice, broccoli, cauliflower, or some sliced bread on the side or perhaps some mashed potatoes. My parents served mushrooms, which I always love.
