    An Old Favorite: Monster Cookies

    Published: May 3, 2012 · Updated: Feb 2, 2021 by Kevin Williams | 11 Comments

Monster cookies are popular in some Old Order Amish settlements.  Monster cookies are just a good ol' gooey chocolately, peanut buttery cookie.  M&Ms are part of the mix, adding a splash of color to the batter and the cookie.  Of course these are a favorite among children, they don't last long in any household.  So if you are looking for a cookie that is a piece of cake to make and just as good to eat, give Monster Cookies a try!  I often see monster cookies for sale at Amish-owned bakeries.  The Amish Cook first shared the Monster Cookie recipe years ago around Halloween, but I think the cookie really get their name from their monster size and monster taste!

      MONSTER COOKIES

                                        2 sticks butter

                                         1 cup white sugar

                                         1 cup brown sugar

                                         3 eggs

                                          ½ teaspoon vanilla

                                           ½ teaspoon corn syrup (clear)

                                           2 teaspoon baking soda

                                            1 ½ cup peanut butter

                                            4 ½ cups oatmeal

                                            2 cups chocolate chips

                                             2cups M&Ms plain

    Preheat over 350 degrees

    Baking time   10-12 minutes

Cream butter, & sugars (white & brown) add eggs, on at a time, vanilla, corn syrup, baking soda, peanut butter, mix well until smooth, add oatmeal, mix well, scrape side of bowl, add chocolate chips, mix, add M&Ms mix , drop  batter on ungreased cookie sheets in spoon fills, (Tablespoon) . Edges should be golden brown. Let cool on cookie sheets about 3 minutes before removing to cooling racks.    Makes 4 ½ doz. plus

I just had the wonderful opportunity to taste a similar cookie at my VFW meeting on Tuesday. A friend made these...I think using the same recipe, but she added peanuts, M&M's, maple chips (or peanutbutter chips?) not sure.....that is a cookie. I can only eat one. LOL
thank you for sharing. She is going to give me her recipe and I will compare it to Lovina's.

This is one of the first recipes I made when I got The Amish Cooks Baking Book. They are sooo good. Also they didn't last long in this household either.

Those sure are hearty, yummy cookies, but I'm a little baffled by the half tsp. of clear corn syrup-never have seen a recipe that called for that in such a tiny amount.:)
Don't mean to offend, just was surprised.

Dawn, that is puzzling, the 1 /2 teaspoon of corn syrup...I'll find out from Lovina what purpose that serves - kevin

Speaking of being baffled, wanted to share something funny. When my husband & I were first married,he asked me ,"What does that mean 'calls for in a recipe'? Like a phone? I don't understand.."
Ha ha.-he never cooked much so he really didn't know!

I was just wondering on the oatmeal. Is this prepared oatmea, or just dry oats?

I usually use the quick-cooking oats, I am guessing you could use any kind.....
