    Blogroll: Amish Bakery Visit

A lot of interesting stuff on this week's Blogroll!

Amish Church Peanut Butter Dip/Spread, this was at Mrs. Yoder's Kitchen in Mt. Hope

AMISH PEANUT BUTTER DIP:  Chasing Supermom posted the recipe for this Amish staple.  We've posted similar recipes on Amish365.com before although I have to admit one ingredient in this bloggers version had me scratching my head: water.  I'm not sure I've seen that added before and I've never added water to my homemade versions of it.  Still, I could see some people using it just to give it the right consistency.  You do have thick, thick versions of the stuff and then you have thinner, runnier versions which can squeeze out of a squirt bottle found in the condiment caddy at some Amish-style restaurants.  I like both versions, but I think I lean towards thicker.  Click here to read Supermom's recipe.  You can see my simple 3-ingredient version here.

AMISH BAKERY:  Here is a nice article about a blogger's visit to an Amish bakery tucked into a buggy shop down a long lane. Would love to know where this is.  The writer herself appears to be based in Washington and the closest Amish settlements to her (that I know of) are 500 miles away and I've been to both of those and can't recall any bakeries fitting this description.  Any ideas anyone?  Click here to read.

GROWING UP MORMISH:   This blog always sort of interests me, written by a 21-year-old Mormon woman who lives deep in the heart of Amish Country (I can't remember where).  Her blog is an intriguing mish-mash of simple living, and Mormon and Amish anecdotes.  This week she visits an Amish furniture store. Click here to read.

AMISH SCHOOLS:  Tom the Backroads Traveler gives us a serene selection of Amish schoolhouse photos from New York State to peruse.  The ones with the blue doors jump out at me as classic Conewango Valley.  I always find photos of Amish schools to be very peaceful and thought-provoking.  Click here to browse's Tom's post this week.

MRS. YODER'S CHOCOLATE ZUCCHINI BROWNIES:  SIGH, somehow I keep coming back to zucchini even though I always say I won't.  Patricia's patchwork made the Amish365 recipe for Mrs. Yoder's Chocolate Zucchini Brownies and posted photos to go with it!:) Yum!!!!!!  These brownies are melt-in-your-mouth delicious and the photos capture that. So, for your zucchini fix, click here for the recipe and post.

KEEPING UP WITH THE JONES:  Okay, this post really intrigued me.  It's just a routine, blog entry on a tourism website.  The northern Indiana tourism bureau is good about involving area Amish in the site, using my sharing dispatches.  This entry was pretty garden variety except for one thing:  the name of the writer.  Now, I will not profess to know every Amish surname in the world. I don't.  But you can pretty much capture 90 percent of the population with these names:  Yoder, Miller, Bontrager,  Stoltzfus and Stutzman, with generous helpings of regional names like Coblentz, Schwartz, Lapp, Stolf, Zehr, Gingerich and dozens and dozens of others.  But Jones?  I've never met an Amish person with the last name of Jones.  So I'm lead to believe Elaine is a convert, but I don't know that.  I'll reach out to the tourism bureau to see if I can get more info.  The other intriguing nugget that makes me think convert is that they only have three children (but there are plenty of other reasons that could be the case also).  So click here to read this interesting entry from an Amish Jones!
