Before I launch into this recipe, I will say that camping is a favorite past-time in some Amish settlements. Â Out west, the Amish in Rexford and St. Ignatius, Montana almost always put an annual family camping trip into their schedules. Â Camping outdoors among the beauty and bounty is very no-frills and natural, perfectly in keeping with Amish beliefs and traditions.
A cake like this wouldn't be too common in Amish kitchens, most often you'll just see a plainly frosted cake. Â The candy decorations would be a frivolous addition in many - but not all - kitchens. Â My friend Jessica was inspired by something she saw (where else?) on Pinterest and made up her own recipe to fit the picture...turned out pretty cool..a cake with a candy campfire on top! Â I can see a campfire resemblance on top:) Â Check out the recipe below:
- Alright, here's what I did for the campfire cake...Again, the design was not my idea. I saw it on pinterest and made it myself using the pic only. There may have been a recipe included, but I'm not sure. I hope I'm not forgetting anything. 🙂
- 1 box yellow cake mix (plus eggs, oil, and water depending on box instructions)
- 4 sticks butter, softened
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1.5 lb powdered sugar (1½ boxes)
- ⅔ cup creamy peanut butter
- 5 mini Twix bars
- Candy corn
- Small pretzel sticks
- Mini marshmallows
- Preheat oven to 350.
- Mix cake mix with eggs, oil, and water according to box instructions.
- Pour batter into two 8 inch round cake pans and bake for recommended time on box (approx. 35-40 min) or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Let cool completely.
- Meanwhile, beat softened butter with a mixer in a large bowl.
- Add vanilla and peanut butter and mix until well combined.
- Add powdered sugar about a half cup at a time and beat until well combined. Remove cakes from pans and transfer onto wax paper.
- Shave off top of one cake to make it flat and place on serving tray.
- Spread about 1 cup frosting on top and place second cake directly on top.
- Frost top and edges of double layer cake with all but 1 cup of remaining frosting. Place about 15-20 candy corn in center of cake, turned different directions to look like flames.
- Unwrap Twix bars and place over candy corn like logs in a fire.
- Pipe or spoon a little more frosting over the middle to add a
- second layer of candy corn flames (maybe 8-12 more).
- Place 1 mini marshmallow on the end of a pretzel stick and place around fire for "roasting marshmallows".
- Repeat with about 5 marshmallows and pretzel sticks. Pipe remaining frosting around bottom edge of cake.

The decorations are SOOOO clever! Wish I had thought about that when I was a scout leader.
