This is Mennonite Chicken and Dumplings recipe is a farmhouse favorite, hearty and full of tender chicken and cooked-perfectly vegetables.
Dumplings are very popular in Amish and Mennonite kitchens. The ingredients for a good dumpling are very basic, almost every Amish or Mennonite cook has them on hand. And almost every family has some sort of variation of a favorite dumpling recipe that gets passed on through the generations.
This recipe comes to me from a Mennonite women in the community of Dayton Virginia. Dayton is a Mennonite community that I’ve explored quite a bit it’s a beautiful settlement tucked away in the Shenandoah Valley. If you ever get a chance to explore that area I highly recommend it. Recipes there are very basic, tinged with a little bit of southern influence, and very old.
Recipes, like this Mennonite Chicken and Dumplings, have been passed down through the generations. Unlike other old order Mennonite settlements, German is not the main language here. Most Mennonites speak English. They do use horse and buggies and generally frown upon most modern technologies.
Now, let's take a photo journey of our chicken and dumplings:
If you make the entire recipe, you'll need to add about a dozen eggs, but you can cut this recipe in half easily.
The dumplings are what really round out this recipe. Super easy and delicious. The hardest part for most people will be keeping the lid shut while the dumplings are cooking.
Make sure you make the dumplings into round balls! And, wow, this turns out delicious!
