Let's buckle up and climb into the blogmobile for our weekly whirl through cyberspace in search of anything and everything Plain. First stop: dating pudding.
DER DUTCHMAN'S DATE PUDDING: The restaurant's website states it is an Amish holiday tradition and I'm sure that is true at their restaurant and in some Amish communities. Other Amish settlements, though, view it as more of a refreshing summer treat. Either way, it is an amazing dessert. What I've never been able to put my finger on is the genesis of date pudding an the Amish, dates are not a food that would have much traditional/historical overlap with the Amish, but date pudding has found its way into many Amish homes and hearts. Click here for the recipe.
PENNSYLVANIA DUTCH SAND TARTS: This is a common Christmas-time cookie among the Amish and Pennsylvania Dutch. Check it out here.
AMISH APPLE AND HONEY CAKE: This is often a cake the Amish indulge in for the holidays, click here and check out the recipe!
INSIDE A SWARTZENTRUBER AMISH HOME: Eric Wesner at the Amish America blog has a video posted of inside a Swartzentruber Amish home. The Swartzentrubers are among the most conservative Amish. What struck me most about the video is how closely it resembles the Swiss Amish of Berne, Indiana, the blue hues, the wood floors, the bare walls....click here to watch this fascinating video.
FRIENDSHIP: Not Amish related, but another gem of a post from one of my favorite Amish country rooted writers, Bruce Stambaugh. Click here to read his ode to the importance of friendship.
