Doughnuts at the Home Place - Easy Amish/Mennonite Doughnut Recipes

    By Kevin Williams

I have a love-hate relationship with doughnuts.  A really good glazed doughnut is something I can usually eat in a few bites and that is the "hate" part, they are so good, but they are usually over with so fast.  A good piece of cake usually takes me a little longer to consume.  Still,  good doughnuts are an art.  I actually live on something called the "doughnut trail", a pathway of amazing bakeries in southwest Ohio that all sell amazing doughnuts.  You actually can get a little "passport" from the visitors bureau and collect stickers from all the places you visit.  I've not yet found the time or caloric courage to do that.   Oh, and while on the topic of doughnuts, my hometown police department has produced a viral video making the rounds which features the old reliable duo: cops and donuts.  Funny video. Click here here to watch it on Facebook.

Amish doughnuts are usually amazing.  There's a rich, deep culinary heritage there.  Think of the famous Rise N Roll doughnuts.

The Home Place, a Mennonite bakery outside of Georgetown, Ohio, makes fresh doughnuts every Friday morning so if you are ever in that area, be prepared for your mouth to water.  You can check out their website, sign up for their newsletter, etc here.   The owner, Delbert Schlabach, was nice enough to pack up some fresh doughnuts to take back to Aster and Bea (which they loved) and was nice enough to pluck a cold can of Coke from the cooler (which I loved, although a Coke and a doughnut...not a good combo for the blood sugar).

There's a video of one of Delbert's sons frying the doughnuts.   And I am not bad with tech stuff and I'm getting better at it, but, geez, Delbert's teenage son delivered this video to my phone instantly.  "You want him to airdrop it to you?" Delbert asked.  I've used "Air Drop" before as a way to delivery large files fast electronically but it'd take me a minute or two  or 10 to refresh my memory on how it works, but Delbert's teenage son within a minute had my phone finagled to accept the video.   I'll have a few more photos and thoughts from The Home Place in the days ahead, but for now, it's all about the doughnuts! So enjoy the video and photos below!

Eat first, ask questions later...that is what I did with this doughnut that I bought...This is a bacon-dotted, maple-glazed doughnut....Man, it sure was good...I didn't know what it was until I send the Schlabach's note days later asking what it was...I just knew it was good!

Check out the video above of fresh doughnuts being made at The Home Place.

Now, as far as some recipes go....I didn't ask for their recipe, but,  this is a popular doughnut recipe on Amish365:
