This recipe has been wildly popular on Amish365 over the years. It failed to crack the top 10 in views in 2016, but in 2012 - 2015, it racked up enormous amounts of clicks before fading. Â Â So I thought today would be a good day to bring it back! This is one of these easy "throw-together meals" that are so common and revered in Amish kitchens. Â Not to mention, delicious! Â If you have a large group coming you can easily double, triple, quaddruple this recipe.
This is a recipe sent to me by an Amish woman in Iowa and apparently finds its way onto church supper tables after services in their community. Looks tasty! Â By the way the author of this recipe recommends Velveeta cheese.
That is a popular brand among the Amish, but I would imagine you could use your favorite cheese and it would work fine. Â Obviously Velveeta is known for its "melty" quality so you wouldn't get that with another cheese, but it'd be healthier!:)
- 1 1 /2 pounds hamburger
- 1 onion, chopped
- 1 /2 pounds spaghetti, cooked 10 minutes and drained
- 2 cups fresh peas
- 2 cups tomato juice
- 1 pound your favorite cheese
- Brown hamburger and onions.
- Drain off grease.
- Add tomato juice and simmer 20 minutes.
- Put cooked spaghetti around the edge of your pan and put the peas in the center.
- Simmer another 15 minutes.
- Cover with cheese and simmer until cheese is completely melted.

Great taste for such an easy recipe! Thanks!

Hi there, I tried this and it was good. I took liberties and substituted the ground beef for ground turkey because I am not a fan of red meat. Still out great.
Kevin
Rose, thanks for the tip, good idea!

Kevin: This recipe sounds quick and delicious, the way it is. However, I am highly allergic to lactose. Certainly there must be cheese out there that is not so high in lactose, but would still be appropriate for this dish. Please, can you help me?

Cheese made with soy can be found in some markets.

Velveeta now sells a 2% cheese right along side the regular one.
