Amish Baked Caramel Delight is recipe that comes to us from an Amish mom in northern Indiana. It's a tasty dessert that she says the whole family lines up for. (Great British Bake-Off has some awesome caramel recipes!)
Desserts are an important Amish cultural component. I don’t talk about them a lot from a cultural standpoint, but why are sweets and the Amish so synonymous? Dessert is part of bringing people together. Sure, maybe not everyone around the table likes the pot roast, the asparagus casserole, or the mashed potatoes, but everyone is going to – in this case – like the caramel delight, or the cookies, or the cake. Dessert is a unifier. It’s also a chance to keep the conversation flowing, keep everyone lingering longer before the spread out for their pre-bedtime chores.
And, of course, MOST (this is a generalization), Amish burn a lot of calories. Yes, to be sure, obesity is a growing problem among the Amish, but it is still the exception rather than the rule. So a few extra calories spent on eating a chocolate dessert isn’t going to break the bank diet-wise.
So, there you go….a short explanation of why dessert serves a cultural purpose among the Amish. Some of the same strands could be used, I am sure, in defending dessert in other cultures.
“Delight” desserts are popular among the Amish. They are easy and can be doubled and tripled without a problem to feed the masses. Good stuff.
The recipe has raisins in it...SIGH, my inclination is to leave them out, but I kept them in for all of you....but...well, they worked in this recipe.... just a personal preference. And you can top it with ice or whipped cream. I'd probably do whipped cream but, again, that is a personal preference. Enjoy! Why, oh why, are raisins added to everything? This Amish Baked Caramel Delight recipe is pretty easy to throw together and it makes the house smell great!
SIGH, and this is where all recipes go wrong - in my opinion - adding raisins!
🍮 Baked Caramel Delight
- ½ cup butter
- ½ cup sugar
- 1-½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- ⅛ teaspoon salt
- ½ cup milk
- ½ cup raisins
- ¾ cup packed brown sugar
- 1 cups cold water
- Whipped cream OR ice cream
📋 Delight Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease 8 x 8 x 2 – inch baking dish.
- Mix butter and sugar till fluffy.
- Stir together: flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Gradually add to butter mixture alternately with milk. Beat at low speed just until combined. Fold in raisins.
- Spread batter in prepared pan.
- Sprinkle with ¾ cup brown sugar.
- Carefully pour cold water over brown sugar.
- Bake for 40 minutes, or until toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Serve warm with whipped cream or ice cream.

I have not made this yet, but which pan size is correct. Text indicates and 8x8 ,but illustration shows a stand loaf pan.

Could I possibly substitute chopped apples for the raisins? I love raisins, but my family not so much.
