Grapes are popular among the Amish. This homemade grape pie recipe has captured my imagination for some time. I first heard about the recipe over 20 years ago from the original Amish Cook and she+ even put the recipe in her first cookbook.
I later ran across the exact same, or very similar, homemade grape pie recipe from an Amish woman in New York. So the recipe must enjoy a following among the Amish but I had never seen it served before – until this past weekend. The Amish benefit supper there featured a table packed with dozens of flavors of pie slices.
I checked them all out before deciding which ones I wanted to sample. I was almost done looking at it all when I saw it: grape pie! Just two slices left! I grabbed them both.
The pie wasn’t the most attractive, because some of the juice fruit filling had drizzled out into the package. But, really, who cares how it looks? It is how it tastes that matters and, wow, it did not disappoint! Yum!
- 5 1 /3 cups of red or white seedless grapes
- 1 1 /3 cup sugar
- ¼ cup flour
- 1 1 /4 teaspoons of lemon juice
- salt to taste
- 1 1 /2 tablespoons butter
- Put grapes in a saucepan without water over low heat.
- Stir in sugar and flour.
- Mix lightly through the grapes.
- Sprinkle with lemon juice.
- Heat for 5 minutes.
- Pour into pie shell.
- Dot with butter.
- Add top crust.
- Bake at 425 for 35 - 40 minutes.
