    North Country Logging

    Published: Dec 12, 2013 · Updated: Feb 2, 2021 by Kevin Williams | Leave a Comment

The Amish population in New York State's "North Country" has been steadily increasing.  This is an ideal locale for the ultra-conservative Swartzentruber Amish because it's a pretty isolated "live and let live" area.  These are some scenes showing a Swartzentruber Amish man doing some logging in the North Country.  He's clearing the land for pasture.  The logs he harvests will be sold off as firewood and as logs for lumber.  I imagine it'd be a bit of adventure getting the horse into the thick forests, but this type of work is definitely not unheard of. I've seen plenty of Amish take whole teams of horses into heavily forested areas to collect sap and, in this case, lumber.  Thank you Jon for sharing these photos!
