Okay, it's Friday and I've got some odds and ends (Pizza Hut Amish, anyone?) to share, none of them enough to make a single post out of, so I just have a mish-mash of things to share.
AMISH IN THE NEWS LINK STINK: Some of you on my email list may have noticed the link to Thursday's Amish in the News was accidentally MIA. Apologies, here is the link.
AMISH IRISH: I ran a link to an article earlier this week about Ireland's only Plain community. Well, turns out the article I linked to was an abridged version of a full article that appeared in Irish college newspaper. The unabridged version of the article is much richer in detail and color. So if you are fascinating with this settlement (as I am), click here to read the whole article.
FOOD FAVORITES: Believe it or not I don't just sit here and surf the net all day, no time for that! I have a few favorite sites I check out daily and then basically I am immersed in my Amish and Plain studies and writing most of the time. I LOVE the food blogging of conservative Mennonite writer, Briana Thomas. What I DON'T love is how I always feel like an unhealthy stomach cesspool after reading it. Most all of her recipes are healthy and, yea, if I ate like that, I'm sure I'd be better off (and don't get me wrong, Rachel cooks healthy meals, but I negate it too much by unhealthy choices between meals!) Anyway, love her recipe for FRENCH TOAST IN A BOWL...click here for the recipe.
Okay, people email me wanting healthy recipes...I run an Amish site with a focus on food, why do think I have healthy recipes? Just kidding, there is a lot more to Amish cooking than shoofly pie or lard-laden pie crusts, but Amish cooking isn't often considered health food. So I go to Briana's site or Smile Sandwich for healthier fare.
The Smile Sandwich (full disclosure: Recipelion is another neat site that the Smile Sandwich author works for and they send some wonderful traffic our way, but I found out about Smile Sandwich completely randomly from one of our readers who emailed me about an Amish-related post on her site and Smile Sandwich has become a personal favorite ever since!) is not run by a Plain person (yes, I am allowed to peruse the sites of the non Plain) . Smile Sandwich has amazing recipes and great food photography (how can you not come away in a better mood after reading something called "Smile Sandwich"?). I just sent Rachel Smile Sandwich's recipe from today: mushroom, spinach and feta frittatta. Sort of a "hint, hint, honey, maybe you can make that for our supper next week one night?" Rachel responded that she likes the recipe and is thinking of making it into little single serving muffins to freeze for breakfast. Yum! I'll report back.

RANDOM PHOTO: I know, I know, I've posted this before (by the way, I guess I say "I know, I know" a lot...because Aster suddenly started parroting that and she now says "I know, I know" all the time, and she says it with the slight exasperated tone that I must say it with)...Anyway, this photo shows how Pizza Hut is a popular spot in northern Indiana's Amish settlement. More buggies than cars in this shot!
