The Lone Star State is not known for its large Amish community. There is one Old order Amish community near Beeville in the far south. But there are at least two thriving Mennonite settlements. One is a Beachy Amish Mennonite community near the town of Lott, which is just outside of Waco. The other settlement is a much larger community outside of Seminole, Texas in the wind-swept west. I've had the book Mennonites in Texas: Quiet in the Land sitting on a shelf in my office for a couple of years. It's a great book describing these two very different Mennonite communities and I love to take it off that shelf from time to time and just flip through the beautiful black and white photography.
One of the book's co-authors, Susan Gaetz Durate was nice enough to join me for a chat on Amish, Etc this week. Click here to listen to an Interesting discussion about the Amish Mennonite community in Lott, Texas.
