This Amish Salisbury Steak Burgers recipe is a favorite among the Amish and it is very typical of these types of "poor man's" dishes that are popular in Plain homes.  Patricia accurately said the burgers turned out kind of like a Salisbury steak in flavor and style.

Ah, Salisbury steak memories...I'm not sure that my Mom ever fixed Salisbury steak, but it was on the school lunch menu a lot when I was a kid. Going from memory, it was a slightly reddish (because of the sauce) meat patty covered in sauce. I remember grudgingly liking it. I'm not a picky eater, but I never thought my school cafeteria food was so bad growing up. I think school lunches are something kids like to poke fun of, but many secretly like the food - like I did. As an adult, I realize what a battle school lunch ladies have in trying to feed 500 kids who all have different levels of pickiness.

Anyway, back to this recipe. You could absolutely eat it on a bun like a hamburger, it'd be kind of messy but I think everything is better with bread. Or just eat it like pictured as a patty with a fork.

Very basic ingredients comprise this dish!

Of course, you can add your own touches like some pepper, mushrooms, onion powder, or garlic powder. A splash of worcestershire sauce is also good

    Fry like a regular hamburger

This recipe makes its own sauce, but you could opt for other sauces besides this one, like a brown gravy, mushroom gravy, or onion gravy. But I like the sauce and gravy that is with this recipe, gives it a classic Salisbury hamburger steak taste! Use lean ground beef for the recipe. That will keep the calories and cholesterol down while maximizing the protein benefits of the beef patties!

The sauce gives the burgers a Salisbury steak feel

This is one of the easiest Salisbury steak recipes you'll find! No egg, no flour, no Shape the meat into hamburger patties, you can add some breadcrumbs to help give shape easier. The steaks pair well with mashed potatoes. Brown the burger patties in a large skillet over medium heat and then simmer.

The recipe, as the name may indicate, comes from the Berne, Indiana community.  These types of recipes seem especially popular there.    On a side note, the culinary techniques of the Amish around the Berne, Indiana area are so rich in tradition, so steeped in history.   it would be so fascinating to collect recipes and cooking/baking tips from the older Amish residents in Adams County, Indiana, you'd find a trove of amazing recipes there, many that have probably never been published before.  Anyway, enjoy these burgers and thank you to Patricia for testing it!
