Thanks for all your great recipes. I enjoy your column every week. We also celebrate Ascension Day. We do not get the day off, but we do have an Ascension day worship in the evening. I believe many churches used to do this but not anymore. Nice to hear that there are other christians that observe this.

Lovina, I'm so sorry to hear of the loss of the twins. As far as the potaotes go, I've planted mine like that & had good success. Thjis year I planted some in 32 gal garbage cans. However when we had the freezing frost on Sunday night, they got hit. I hear that it you cut the growth off, they might still make it. Have you had any luck with that?

Mares that are twins have a genetic predilection to having twins themselves. Statistically if there is a twin pregnancy carried to term one twin is born alive and one is usually stillborn. This is because the way the twins are presented is different than, say, goats or cows. And the breaking of the umbilical cord in horses causes the coal to breathe immediately. What happens is this: one foal is positioned normally, hooves first, and is born. The umbilical cord breaks when it is supposed to, about the time the nostrils of the foal have reached the outside air. The second foal tends to be presented hind hooves first and when the umbilical cord breaks the nose is still inside the dam and the foal smothers. Like in all pregnancies mothers tend to get more adept at actually having babies the more babies they have had. Your older mare likely didn't hesitate in having her second foal and was able to push it out before it smothered OR it was pointed the right way for some reason. The younger mare actually had a very common, normal outcome for a twin pregnancy in horses. A very high percentage of twin foals just don't make it.
There is a high chance that both these mares will twin in the future. There is a high chance their fillies will one day throw twins, too. People go about this in a couple of ways: don't breed the mare because of a poor potential outcome, breed them and be very available when they are due to foal so you can help out, or you can breed them like any other mare and let them birth like any other mare and hope for the best. It's really a shame you didn't know in advance.
